Realism Portrait

Adobe Photoshop - November 2021

 01 Project Overview

For this project I choose a Photograph to digitally paint. Concept art, paintings, drawings, or 3D renderings were not allowed.

Some tips that I was given were:

- Human Portraits.
- Avoid too many wrinkles, or sweaty faces.
- Avoid more than one person in a painting. Stick to portraits.
- Landscapes are great, but techniques should be researched while painting.
- Mechanical objects, like cars are more difficult.

This Project was spilt into 4 parts and completed using many different shades, brushes, textures.

  • Due BEFORE Class 05 – A JPEG or PNG of what you would like to paint. 5% Overall Grade Deduction for not completing this task

1: Send to your instructor via D2L mail system a JPG or PNG of the Photograph you would like to paint for this assignment.

    - It must be approved by the instructor before proceeding.

2: For this project choose a Photograph to digitally paint. It must be a PHOTOGRAPH (from any source).

  • 1: File specifications are 1920px × 1080 px (pixels) at 72ppi (ppi = pixels per inch). The orientation is up to you, Portrait or Landscape (vertical or horizontal).

    - 10% Grade deduction for not using the correct File Naming Convention.

    - 20% Grade deduction for not using the correct File Specs.

2: For this project you will paint a Photograph. This can be done using almost any of the tools in Photoshop. The painting will be Black, White and shades of Gray (achromatic).

    - NO COLOUR can be used and NO IMAGE COMPOSITING.

    - Do not Clone Stamp content from an image.

    - Do not make selections from images and then make fills of those selections.

    - Do not posterize an image and use that as a foundation for your painting

    - Do not take the photograph and Blend Tool or Smudge it hoping it will look like a painting

3: Choose a Photograph to digitally paint. It must be a PHOTOGRAPH (from any source).

    - YOU CANNOT use concept art, paintings, drawings, or 3D renderings. Doing so will receive automatic 0% (zero) failing grade.

    - A Photograph is taken using a camera. If you think the “image” was achieved using anything but a camera, then it is likely not a ‘photo’.

    - Do not use a photo of artwork e.g. The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

4: Include the Photograph in your assignment file. It does not have to be visible.

5: (Optional) Flip your image upside-down to increase painting accuracy. This is done with Image > Image Rotation > 180.

6: This assignment will take A LOT of time. It will be time well spent towards your future in using raster based software. Embrace this creative opportunity and spend an afternoon (or more) having fun with painting.

  • Due Class 08 - The fully finished assignment. ALL Details completed. Feedback incorporated. 9: Failure to incorporate feedback will mean a 0% on the entire assignment.

    10: Submit a Photoshop file: firstname_lastname_Assignment04.PSD
